Lahore, 100 students of premier institutions of the city volunteered to remove waste and garbage from and along Gulshan-i-Ravi drain on Sunday taking an initiative by the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC). Agreed in connection with World Environment Day, the operation clean-up was carried out from Babu Sabu to Gulshan-i-Ravi Main Boulevard from where a majority of the applicants held a walk while a few selected for removing graffiti by whitewashing the walls.
Some 200 or so LWMC employees and Water and Sanitation Agency staff arrived arrive at around 5.30am near Babu Sabu on dumper trucks. They were sweeping and washing the roads along the drain when students of Punjab University’s environment sciences and applied psychology departments, LUMS School of business, GC University’s MBA, King Edwards Medical University and classes V, VII and VIII also become the part of the project for removal of the garbage.
LWMC spokesperson Memoona Arslan said the de-silting of drains and cleaning of adjoining roads would continue till September on emergency basis to prevent flooding due to pungent problems in rainy season in the city. About 150 dumper truck-loads of waste and garbage were collected from the area and disposed of at dumping site, she said.
